Photographic representations of infectious disease epidemics like SARS, Ebola and COVID-19 reflect and in turn influence twenty-first century scientific and popular approaches to epidemic response and preparedness. And yet the history of the application of photography to the documentation of epidemics remains unexamined. The talk examines the emergence of epidemic photography in the context of the Third Plague Pandemic (1894-1959) - a global pandemic that led to 12 million deaths, and was the first be captured by the photographic lens.
