Activity: Talk or presentation typesInvited talk

Description

The paper explored significant aspects of the history of the terms 'modern' and 'contemporary', from their first appearance in late Latin, through their vernacular development, first in Italian then in French and English. It looked specifically at the origins of the two words, their semantic evolution and their ramifications over time; their acquired cultural resonance and, finally their overlap in the twentieth century.
