Opening lecture IAU Symposium 247, Waves and Oscillations in the Solar Atmosphere: Heating and Magneto-Seismology, Isla de Margarita, Venezuela. I am due to give the opening keynote review at this international meeting; I plan to stress the development of coronal seismology, a new field in solar physics in which I wrote a pioneer paper in 1984.
