Description
This interactive workshop identifies (and interrogates) features of Academic Writing to examine the challenges of teaching and engaging with it. I argue that, freighted at once with convention and criticality, Academic Writing is a site of dialectical tension that manifests itself in pedagogy and practice. Institutional structures, sector-wide policies (especially in Anglophone contexts), and the politics of publication compound the dialectical tension and, in the process, deepen the differences that they are ostensibly designed to bridge (if not outright resolve). The argument progresses to create room for reflection wherein participants are encouraged to share their experience of teaching Academic Writing and publishing their research with a view to collectively find sustainable practices for our profession.
