Description

This paper looks to the interaction between both the Crown and Peoples of Scotland in Norway as they conducted trade, raids and all-out war against each other in the period between 1589 (The renewed Stuart-Oldenburg Alliance) and 1707 (the Treaty of Union). While acknowledging 'hyped' episodes such as the Kringen massacre of Scots (1612), it focusses on larger conflicts such as the 1645 'Hannibalskrig' and the first 1666 period war. The paper concludes with an evaluation of non-state level interaction throughout these episodes such as the Scottish involvement in the running of the Mostadmark ironworks.
