Multilingual children’s literature from Ukraine past present future

Activity: Talk or presentation typesPublic lecture/debate/seminar

Description

Dr. Finer researches transnational and multilingual interactions between English, Polish, Ukrainian, Yiddish, and Russian language cultures. She will explore how Ukraine’s minority languages have been represented in children’s literature and explore the potential for creative multilingualism and language mixing to have a place in a future multicultural Ukraine. Her presentation is inspired by her research into Polish-British children’s culture, research which shaped her conviction that multilingualism can be a positive force for sustaining transnational communities and families separated by war. Dr. Finer was the founding convenor of the St Andrews undergraduate degree in Comparative Literature which brings together all the languages and cultures taught in the School of Modern Languages. She holds a St Andrews / Emory Collaborative Grant for a project researching multilingual children’s print culture of Ukraine and co-lead the Ostroh Academy/University of St Andrews Partnership for Advancing the Public Humanities funded by UUKi.
