The Nun, the Squire and the Great Letter: Visionary Devotion and Intercession in Fifteenth-Century Yorkshire
This paper will consider a vision attributed to a Yorkshire nun in 1403. The vision survives in a single manuscript in the form of a short Middle English prose text followed by Latin prayers. The content of the vision does not quite match the following material, suggesting some disruption in transmission. Nevertheless it is clear that recitation of certain psalms played a central role in contemporary devotion, and particularly in intercessions for the dead.I will give a close reading of the vision itself and consider its manuscript context in Cambridge University Library Ii.6.43. I will also investigate its historical context in fifteenth-century Yorkshire.
