Description

MASTS Workshop on Fluorometry, Chlorophyll and Oxygen measurements from Animal-borne platforms

The Scottish Funding Council financed Marine Alliance for Science and Technology Scotland (MASTS) is an initiative that provides the academic platform and knowledge needed to deliver high quality, integrated marine science. The scientific activity to support MASTS is conducted by a number of Joint Research Themes (JRTs). The strategic goal of the Platforms & Sensors JRT is to achieve excellence in marine observing technology by introducing new sensing systems, devising novel deployment methods and developing computational strategies for interpreting large and complex data sets.

The SMRU CTD-SRDL animal-borne tag is capable of measurements that compare favourably with standard oceanographic tools. Coupled with effective data sampling and compression techniques, the current tag is able to generate detailed and accurate oceanographic profiles which are relayed back in near real-time. The potential of this tag has not yet been fully realised, and incorporation of fluorescence, light and oxygen sensors would be a significant step forward for marine and oceanographic science.
