Description
Thee Masterclass is organised by the Proctor’s Office and is especially designed for early career members of academic staff. Lunch is available from 12 noon and the presentations will begin at 12.30pm. Each speaker will present for 20 minutes followed by 20 minutes of discussion. The presenters are Dr Konrad Lawson (History) and Dr Anna Brown (Management). These are colleagues whose outstanding teaching qualities have been officially recognised through a Teaching Award. The aim is to disseminate best practice and make innovative teaching ideas more widely available across the University.
Anna’s presentation will explore the ways in which you can instil creativity into the learning experience. Drawing on examples of practical exercises and interventions in her teaching, Anna will explore how working with materials (in this case clay and playdoh) can aid reflection on key concepts or ideas presented in lectures. Anna’s pedagogy is based on critically reflexive practice, where we are challenged to question the assumptions that underpin our understanding, and draws on her experiences of Fine Art training as well as her research and practice in craft.
Konrad’s presentation will explore several simple ways to integrate laptop-based writing into the small seminar student experience with something as simple as a shared Google Document. He will introduce the idea of the in-class ‘pair writing’ exercise (based on ‘pair programming’ practice of some computer programmers), which is especially helpful for students who find writing longer research essays a challenge, and brief individual or group-based sharing of thoughts and questions on a key text for discussion. The latter can be a regular planned exercise, or carried out when shortcomings in a seminar discussion have been identified.
The format will be informal with plenty of time for discussion. It will also be an opportunity to network with early career lecturers in Arts and Science.
We look forward to seeing you at the Masterclass.
