Marvel-ous Thinking: The MCU as Philosophy in Action

Activity: Talk or presentation typesInvited talk

Description

The purpose of this discussion is to explore how we can use film and popular culture as a source of philosophizing. In this case, the body of films and streamable television shows that constitute the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) will undergo exploration. This short talk will be split into two parts. The first seeks to engage with film as a source of philosophical, and indeed also political, discourse. Why should we think about philosophy when we engage with film? What about pop-cinema can be philosophical? After outlining that film and cinema may be understood as “philosophy in action,” the wealth of philosophical discourse embedded within the MCU will be explicated. What can Loki tell us about temporality in the philosophy of religion? In what manner is the Age of Ultron defined by its wooden condition? What do Iron Man and Descartes share? What is it for The Avengers to “assemble”?
