Description
On Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 June StAMPers took over bandstands in Cupar, St Andrews and Dunfermline. Children from local brass bands participating in the StAMP programme (St Andrews Music Participation, https://stamp.wp.st-andrews.ac.uk/, managed by Ellen Thomson of the Laidlaw Music Centre) had been working with composer Andrew Knight-Hill and astronomer Anne-Marie Weijmans to create an immersive piece of music specifically designed to be performed at the bandstands. The children performed the piece ‘Making of the Stars' from memory whilst moving around the bandstand to an electronic backing inspired by themes of astronomy, in particular stellar evolution and the life cycle of stars. The cosmic vision of the piece was a development of previous work from Shine: a longstanding arts, science and music project within the University of St Andrews.Part of the music performed at the bandstands is currently being used in an installation at the observatory in St Andrews, designed by Fife artist Tim Fitzpatrick. ‘in colour’ will be on display till Saturday 24 June, with opening hours 8:00 - 11:00 each morning, as well as an additional afternoon opening 14:00 - 17:00 on Friday 23 June.
