Description

Colloquium:

Kinematic mapping and modelling of early-type galaxies

Dynamical studies of galaxies offer us valuable insights into the evolutionary paths of galaxy formation and growth, especially for the nearby ones where we are able to resolve dynamical structures such as kinematical decoupled cores and inner discs. With integral-field spectroscopy (IFS) we can map the stellar and gas kinematics in galaxies, as well as their chemical composition.

In this talk I will first give a brief overview of different approaches to explore galaxy dynamics in IFS data sets. I will then discuss how extending IFS observations beyond the central regions of the galaxies can further help us gain insight into the dynamical structure of galaxies. By observing the behaviour of stars and gas in the outskirts of galaxies, we can not only test various galaxy formation models, but also model the properties of the dark matter haloes surrounding these galaxies: I will give a few examples of recent work in this area.
