Is Ecclesiastes Symmetrically Designed? A Reexamination of the Structure of Ecclesiastes

Activity: Talk or presentation typesPresentation

Description

Ecclesiastes’ meaning and structure remain somewhat ambiguous, but behold some of the most complex poetics in the Hebrew Bible. Yet, Ecclesiastes establishes itself as a polythematic work rotating around a sequence of ‘panels’ intended to be read recursively. Methodologies built on the theory and practice of recursive symmetry bring a solution to the often-neglected study of poetics in Ecclesiastes. Such a solution is specifically the structuralist attempt to identify recursive symmetries to assist and entirely variegate the delineation of Ecclesiastes. Virtually all of Ecclesiastes can be understood through an outline shaped by a method of recursivity. This necessarily requires conceptual-syntactic demarcation at every text level: line, phrase, clause, pericope, panel, chapter, and so on. Using these poetic techniques allows these panels to relate to one another at varying levels of hierarchical subordination. These chiasms and structures are the substrata for more than comparison between textual hierarchies but also for deriving thematics that are in congruence across the entire scribal architecture of Ecclesiastes.
