Description
As generalist interested in comparative history and culture of modern Central Europe broadly defined, I often stumble upon the roadblock of little or none research on significant elements of the recent Albanian past. Overcoming these deficiencies will allow for an improved comprehension of all-European history. Most significantly, the counterintuitive Albanian rescue of Jews during World War II punctures the widely held Western view that nothing could be done to stop the Holocaust. Other examples include: the largely unknown history of Egypt’s ethnically Albanian elite between 1805 and 1952, the expulsion of ‘Turks’ (mostly Albanians) from interwar Yugoslavia to Turkey, the question whether Kosovan Albanians’ links with Egypt might have facilitated Yugoslavia’s status as a leader in the Non-Aligned Movement, or why Belgrade did not develop a separate Kosovan language for the republic.
