Great Power Conflict in Syria: from Proxy War to Sanctions War

Activity: Talk or presentation typesInvited talk

Description

Reflective of a new "struggle for Syria" , Russian US rivalry over Syria is transforming the conflict. While Russian intervention prevented the fall of the regime and allowed Asad to move toward a form of reconstruction that would reward loyalists and punish opponents, US counter-intervention aimed to deprive the regime, Russia and Iran of the fruits of victory by keeping Syria a failed state. After the proxy war in Syria moved toward a frozen conflict, the struggle moved to the economic level where the US used its dominance of the world financial system to block reconstruction and inflict enough pain to fructure the regime and stimulate revolt. The result is a humanitarian crisis in Syria but so far, continued regime resilience
