Description
This presentation will explore the implementation of a student-led research project designed to foster language learner autonomy in a Japanese university classroom. To do this, it will evaluate the pedagogical approach adopted by Thomas, the instructor, alongside the research proposals and projects of two undergraduates, Mina and Nao, as illustrative case studies. Student performance will be compared, contrasted, and examined against criteria for autonomy-based learning environments from the literature: target language use, collaborative knowledge construction, planning and self-management, and self-evaluation of learning (Little et al. 2017). The activity was broadly effective in promoting autonomous learning behaviours, but the presenter will highlight areas for improvement, including the need for more continuous and inclusive assessment. The presentation will offer valuable insights and practical considerations relevant to other Language Center instructors aiming to integrate autonomy-focused activities in their own classrooms.Period | 20 Jan 2025 |
