Description
Emma Cameron and TJ Young were panelists via videolink from McMurdo Station, Antarctica, in the ‘Exploring Polar Environments’ Day outreach event hosted by Newcastle University. TJ and Emma shared their own personal experiences of conducting fieldwork in the polar regions over 14 seasons (TJ) as well as from a newcomer’s perspective (Emma). Due to the 13-hour time zone difference, as well as conducting GNSS and seismic experiments out on nearby Eastwind Glacier earlier the same day, they only participated in the first of three panels; however they submitted a short video for the other two sessions held in the wee hours of the polar night. This also coincidentally happened to be Emma’s first time on a glacier (and doing fieldwork!) and so she shared some fresh experiences and reflections of her journey into polar science to the panel. She emphasised that no one should feel like they aren’t qualified to participate in polar fieldwork, especially as many national programs, including the US Antarctic Program that Emma and TJ are deploying through, have mechanisms in place to train people on-site.Period | 20 Nov 2023 |
