What is the state of affairs between China and Taiwan? Why does Taiwan matter to the US and the World? And why did thousands march in Hong Kong to protest against the government?The panel discussion will explore the future of Taiwan’s democracy, China’s military activity in the Taiwan Strait and the wider consequences of Cross-Strait relations for the South-East Asia. We will discuss the suppression of political dissent in Hong Kong and the role of media and technology in mass surveillance.

Join us to hear from Michael Mo, the Konishi Foundation Scholar in East Asian Studies at Newcastle University.
Michael Mo is a prominent voice in the studies of the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong, whose personal story reflects Hong Kong’s long battle against repression. After he was elected as a local councillor, he had to flee Hong Kong as a result of persecution by the Hong Kong authorities. His research focuses on the role of political polarisation on social movements and hybrid regimes in South-East Asia.
We will also hear from Dr Sarah Liu, a Senior Lecturer at the School of Social and Political Science, the The University of Edinburgh, and Dr Hsinyen Lai, an Associate Lecturer at the University of St Andrews. Apart from her research on the cross-national comparison of gender and politics, Dr Liu also serves as an editorial board member of the Journal of Taiwan Studies. Dr Hsinyen Lai was born and brought up in Taiwan, and his research centres on the relations between Taiwan and the Middle East, particularly Taiwan’s relations with the Gulf States during the Cold War.
