This paper focuses on the British reception of 'West Side Story' when the musical was first staged there in the late 1950s – looking particularly at how its themes of juvenile delinquency and inter-cultural conflict were understood from a British perspective, and also the ways in which British audiences and commentators related the show and its music to the contemporary popular music scene.
