Description
Book Group "Reading in Place"Book Group “Reading in Place” at the Festival of Jewish Culture, Krakow, Poland
Do you like to read when you travel and travel when you read? This new reading group brings festival participants together to discuss poetry and prose by writers who engage with the Jewish experience in Poland. Our readings will explore issues of presence and absence, emigration and homecoming, identity and memory. The sessions will be lead by Emily Finer, PhD, Lecturer in Comparative Literature at the University of St Andrews, who hopes to form a temporary community of readers who will enjoy reflecting on their own encounters in Krakow through literature. Texts in English will be provided in the first session and will include writing by Eva Hoffman, Hannah Krall, Czesław Miłosz, Liudmila Ulitskaya, and Anne Michaels. Everyone is welcome and we will start from the premise that we are all translators at the festival as we discover perspectives that connect and diverge from our own experiences.
Festival Reading Room
A reading room out in the open air! In the Festival Quarter you can simply read cool books, sitting comfortably on the grass or in a deck chair, sipping coffee or lemonade, with a choice of hundreds of books and magazines. We have selected books which can teach and talk about multiculturalism, common Polish - Jewish history, locality and communalism. You'll find scientific books, albums, magazines, reports, and carefully selected fiction. In a specially prepared reading room, children will be able to play, discovering the world through children's literature. Throughout the opening hours of the Quarter, you'll get a chance to enjoy literary events - meetings with authors, workshops and presentations.
The partner of Festival Reading Room and literary programme is the Krakow Festival Office, operator of Krakow UNESCO City of Literature.
