‘A Wonderful Spectacle of Failure and Helplessness’: Bradley Headstone and the Tragicomedy of Visual Identity in Dickens’ Our Mutual Friend

Activity: Talk or presentation types › Presentation

Description

At the 2025 Dickens' Day Conference, 'Dickens and Art', I presented a paper analysing the character of Bradley Headstone from Dickens’ 'Our Mutual Friend' as an unstable, villainous caricature of performative bourgeois respectability. A working-class schoolteacher with a humble background, Headstone projects a colourless image of middle-class assimilation through his monochrome clothing, accentuated by Dickens' mimetically visual language. The emphatic dullness of Headstone’s attire – a clear façade – is comic in its extremity. Yet, the eventual destruction of Headstone’s visual façade performs a much darker narrative of repressed male passion and the consequences of social inequality and prejudice. The Headstone subplot in 'Our Mutual Friend' reveals the tragic potential created by the failure of visual identity as a system of self-representation, and functions as a dark foil to the comic decomposition of Dickens' more ridiculous caricatures, like the Barnacles of 'Little Dorrit', and their statically constructed façades.
